 Within the framework of UNESCO's fields of competence and its objectives in disseminating the principles of media education among media professionals a training course has been organized in the Egyptian National Commission under the auspices of his Excellency Dr. Hany Helal minister of Higher Education and State for Scientific research ,and chairman of the Egyptian National Commission for UNESCO. The title of the course is" Teachings and Dissemination of the principles of media education ", the course ran from 25to27 October 2008 and about 35 journalists ,editors ,broadcasters ,producers representing TV , press and radio participated in the course. Eng. Safwat Salem, Secretary General of the Egyptian National Commission, stressed in his speech ,delivered on his behalf by assistant secretary general Mrs. Mona Allam, the importance of this course in disseminating the basic principles of media education among the professionals working in that field. He stressed as well the importance of improving and enhancing the skills of critical thinking of audience and confirmed the importance to teach and integrate media education and communication skills in curricula and include as well the educational policies putting into consideration the ethics of media. In his speech Dr. Adly Reda, professor in the faculty of mass communication, Cairo University and Coordinator of the course, affirmed the importance of disseminating critical thinking and the ability to judge media messages autonomously. In the first session, Dr. Ebtisam Elgendy, Head of English section, Faculty of mass communication, Cairo University, gave a lecture about the concepts and principles of media education. Then Dr. Sami Elsherif, Dean of the Faculty of Mass Communication, Modern University of Information, spoke about the methods of dealing with the new means of communication such as the internet and satellites on the light of the principles of media education. On the second day, Dr: Mona El hadidi , professor in the faculty of mass communication , Cairo university handled by discussion the means of protecting adults and children from the negative impact of mass media . Dr. Hassan Emad Mekawy, Deputy of the Faculty of Mass Communication, gave a lecture about the ethics of media and its wide impact on media services. On the third day, Dr Nagwa Kamal, deputy of the faculty of mass communication, Cairo University, spoke about the role played by mass media in fulfilling the needs of the marginalized communities and the poor specially in rural and urban areas. Then Dr. Barakat Abd El Aziz, professor in the faculty of Mass Communication, Cairo University, tackled media education and the critical thinking the individual should have towards the contents of what’s presented by media to him. Finally recommendations were reached:- -The necessity to continue such courses in the field of media education due to its wide impact on the new generation of media professionals. - To lengthen the duration of such courses. -to concentrate on the practical part of the course. |
