Mrs. Mervat Hamed, Head of Education and Social Science Department in the Egyptian National Commission for UNESCO, presented a paper in the Regional workshop on "The role of Arab Woman in raising health awareness and development of society. This comes within the framework of UN initiative to focus resources for effective school health education. The paper is presented in Tunisia 1-3 February 2006 and it revolved around the following
-Aids is a serious health problem .To confront it all sectors in society should cooperate together as it is difficult for the government alone to reach the marginalized and endangered groups.Egypt realized the importance of cooperation and collaboration between the government and the private sector in carrying out the activities related to protection against AIDS and raising awareness among schools 'students most specifically. Efforts of all sectors have been coordinated as follows:--Cooperation with the ministry of health as it undertakes the mission of laying the national strategies of combating AIDS.<BR>-Cooperation with the ministry of education including the issue of AIDS within school curricula and launching awareness campaigns among students at schools and -universities.-cooperation with the ministry of labor to spread awareness among workers.-Cooperation with media sector.-cooperation with non-governmental and civil societies. The activities done through the Egyptian national commission for UNESCO to fight AIDS in 2005:-<BR>-A seminar is organized in Masr gedida school for girls.-Two projects have been carried out by the Egyptian National Commission in cooperation with the Ministry of Education under the umbrella of UNESCO. A-Activities covering school health to achieve EFA on HIV. B-A national initiative to stress morals and AIDS impact on children.-Activities have been practiced in that regard in Ain Shams University-Many seminars on health and moral ethics have been held to reflect the seriousness of AIDS.- Activities have been executed through the environmental awareness group which went around the different schools- Videos conferences and meetings have been held to spread means of protection and prevention.
The role of women in health care and spreading awareness.-women should penetrate all fields as physicians, nurse, social volunteers, teachers, health care specialists and as partners in health programs.-they should spread awareness and culture of health and exchange experiences with other societies and regionalorganizations.
-: RecommendationsAs far as culture and education are the main weapons in fighting AIDS the following has been suggested:-1-Paying much care to preventive education as a strategic access to defy the disease.2-Producing educational materials that suit the Arab culture and that could be used in school curricula.3-Offering good training opportunities for teachers on the ethics of preventive education.4-Giving much care to the rights of AIDS 'patients and improving their life style.5-laying stress on youth and holding orientation programs on prevention among fragile segment of society.
